Mitre10 Dream Home draws a massive national audience to watch couples compete to turn dilapidated properties into, well, dream homes. The latest series was given added pep with a mobile website app that allowed viewers to vote for their favourite team during the programme. Not only could viewers help the team of their choice to win; the app provided opportunities for them to experience that winning feeling themselves with prize draws for online participants.
As development partner with agency Contagion, The Cohorts created a fully responsive site to work across the range of online channels used by viewers; desktop, tablet and smartphone. The app provided functionality for voting and prize draws as well as information and notifications for each episode in the series. An innovative ‘scratch and win’ interface was created by The Cohorts to maximise the users’ experience of the excitement of participating.
A high standard of security was required by TVNZ to ensure the voting and prize-winning functions could not be rorted or hacked. Third party testing confirmed that we had developed a very robust and secure platform.
The app had to work in three different states; pre-show, during the show, and post-show. High usage during the show meant load-balancing across ten servers was critical to scale up to meet user demand.
The popularity of the app was huge. It added to audience engagement and helped make Dream Home a winner for the broadcaster.
